When 17-year-old Milou passed away on 2 October 2023 by euthanasia, it marked the end of a long and painful journey.

Once a lively, joyful girl, Milou had become only a shadow of her former self, struggling with deep psychological trauma. Her family and therapists did everything they could to ease her suffering and help her find reasons to live. But after years of fighting without relief, euthanasia finally brought the peace she had longed for. Her battle for a dignified end to her suffering seemed over — until a group of psychiatrists and doctors reopened the debate, questioning whether euthanasia should be allowed for people under 30.
