In the wake of Iran’s ruthless 1980s political purges, filmmaker Nima Sarvestani and other exiles have spent decades pursuing justice for the atrocities committed by the Iranian regime against them or their families. But their moment of reckoning comes when they’re contacted by a man in Sweden who’s been receiving chilling threats from his ex-wife’s godfather.
This figure turns out to be Hamid Noury, a key member of the notorious Death Committee responsible for orchestrating mass executions in Iranian prisons during the 80s.
Driven by personal loss and a deep-seated thirst for justice, Nima and the others hatch a daring plan to lure Noury to Sweden where they believe he can finally face the consequences of his crimes. As Noury boards the flight, the tension mounts. The team waits nervously at the airport, knowing that if Noury isn’t arrested upon arrival, they could be in grave danger. But when he lands, the authorities swoop in, arresting him on charges of murder and crimes against humanity.
Through poignant courtroom testimonies and survivor accounts, Surviving the Death Committee unveils a harrowing tale of political violence, profound grief, and the fragile hope for justice. By Nima Sarvestani, 88' 2025 Sweden.
